// Bani Shanta, the island of the forgotten women by Alessandro Grassani

About 200 women living and working on the island Bani Shanta in one of the 14 official brothels in Bangladesh, a Muslim country where prostitution is considered legal. The global warming threaten the life of the women and their children. The river bed of the Pashur has changed and decreased the size of the seaport Mongla which is near by the island. Less national and international vessels in the port means less customers for the prostitutes. Further the more and more heavily submergence in the monsoon season threatened the life of the inhabitants of the island. Shunned by the society and without any financial help, the prostitutes are living in an extreme poverty. NGO`s have just started a program to offer them alternative works to save the prostitutes from misery.
