In 1985, Stefan Enders, at that time still a student, was awarded with the “Kunstpreis” of the Kunstverein Eisenturm, Mainz. Exactly 20 years later he was appointed Professor for photography at the University of Applied Science in Mainz, and thus returned to his hometown.
The exhibited photographs, taken during this period of 20 years, originate from different places. However, they can be regarded as a cohesive and interrelated work/opus/series. Bound for the most diverse countries of the world, Stefan Enders encounters people and faces, which tell their own unique stories. Equipped with his wide-angle lense he detects situations and moments of everyday life, reducing the spatial distance to a minimum of a few centimetres. The act of photographing resembles an intuitive “breath of reality”. Face to face.
Myanmar, einst unter dem Namen Burma ein reiches Land, wird heute von einer grausamen und korrupten Militärdiktatur regiert und ist zu einem der ärmsten Staaten der Welt heruntergewirtschaftet worden. Die ausgestellte Arbeit wurden direkt nach ihrem Entstehen im Jahr 2003 mit dem Fuji-Euro-Press-Photo-Award ausgezeichnet, – sie ist nicht als Reportage im klassischen Sinn zu verstehen, der Fotograf Stefan Enders versuchte sich viel mehr diesem Land, das über viele Jahrzehnte von der Außenwelt weitgehend abgeschnitten war, auf seine Weise zu nähern. So wie in vielen anderen Ländern läßt er die Menschen durch ihre Gesichter ihre eigene Geschichte erzählen.
